PrEP (Prä-Expositions-Prophylaxe)

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a preventive medication regimen (usually Truvada/tenofovir + emtricitabine) that reduces the risk of HIV infection by more than 99%. PrEP is taken daily or on an "on-demand" schedule (before and after high-risk sexual activity).

In Switzerland, PrEP has been covered by health insurance under certain conditions since 2024 (FOPH criteria: proven increased risk of exposure). Counseling & Prescription: Checkpoints, HIV clinics at university hospitals, some general practitioners with experience in HIV care.
